SHS 431 - Women’s Issues and Mental Health

Prerequisites: None
Addresses women’s mental health issues from a feminist perspective. Students will learn about the impact of socialization on women’s development as it relates to functioning within important relationships throughout the life cycle. The meaning and value of “connection” is explored, with particular emphasis on how helping professionals can develop a supportive therapeutic alliance with women in health and mental health care settings. Women’s particular treatment needs are examined within the context of a supportive, self-empowerment practice model which utilizes concepts from leading theorists in feminist and relational ways of thinking.
