HCA 418 - Mental Health Issues and the Law Prerequisites: None Explores the jurisprudence of mental health law and the social policy upon which it is built. It is intended to provide a foundation in the law as it relates to persons with mental illness or other disabilities. Topics covered include civil commitment, patients’ rights, the right to treatment, the right to refuse treatment, competency, guardianship, confidentiality, and malpractice. Students learn legal skills such as reading and interpreting statutes and legal opinions. Relevant legal and ethical issues confronting providers are addressed throughout the course.
