Students who successfully complete the English Literary Studies/Secondary Education double major are recommended for teaching certification in this specialized area, grades 7-12.
Undergraduates pursuing a double major in English Literary Studies and Secondary Education must satisfy the following overall requirements:
* University Core Curriculum Requirements, with one exception: For this double major, the Core Concentration is declared as English Literary Studies. No other core concentration is required.
* Secondary Education requirements; and,
*English Literary Studies requirements for the double major as modified below:
Speech Requirement. English Literary Studies/Secondary Education majors take the SHAE public speaking requirement.
- COMM 210 - Introduction to Public Speaking
Foundation Courses. English Literary Studies/Secondary Education majors take both of the courses listed below.
American Literature Requirement. English Literary Studies/Secondary Education majors take both of the courses listed below
British Literature Requirement. English Literary Studies/Secondary Education majors choose one British Literature course (ENG 270 or equivalent) and one Shakespeare course (Edu 350 or equivalent).
Global Literature Requirement - English Literary Studies/Secondary Education majors choose one of the courses listed below.
Open Electives Requirement - English Literary Studies/Secondary Education majors may count the following three courses as 3 of the 4 electives required by the English Lit Studies major:

- a. ENG 210: Myth, Fantasy, and Imagination (or Greek/Roman myth equivalent);
- b. EDU 412: Adolescent Multicultural Lit (an EDUCATION requirement).
- c. ENG 280: British Literature ( or equivalent)
For the 4th elective required by the English Literary Studies major, double majors choose one free English Lit elective (3 credits required). The full list of options is similar to that listed for the English Literary Studies major. There are a few exceptions because some elective courses for the Eng Lit Studies stand-alone major are required for the ENG/SEC ED double major.
Capstone Sequence. English Literary Studies/Secondary Education majors take both of the courses listed below.
Experiential/Applied Learning. Double majors in English Lit Studies and Secondary Education fulfill this requirement through the Education requirement: EDU 45O. STUDENT TEACHING.
The English Literary Studies/Secondary Education double major is a combined total of 107 REQUIRED credits. Students electing this double major also take a sufficient number of free elective credits to reach the 120-credit graduation requirement.
English Literary Studies/Secondary Education double majors may take a semester study abroad in Fall of their junior year only.
