Program Requirements

Majors pursuing a dual major for secondary education must satisfy University Core Curriculum requirements and the College speech requirement, COMM 210 . In addition, they must complete the following courses and a sufficient number of electives to total 120 credits.

• This course is a Pre-Practicum Residency requirement for all Secondary Education majors that will be repeated during sophomore and junior years. All Secondary Education students will be placed in a middle/high school for field experiences and will register for this course to demonstrate their field participation, during: (1) sophomore fall semester, (2) sophomore spring semester, (2) junior fall semester, and (3) junior spring semester. Students must register for three one-hour sections of this course during those semesters and complete a minimum 30-hour residency over the course of each semester. Juniors abroad are excused from this requirement for the abroad semester.

Licensure

All teacher education programs at Roger Williams University are approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Under the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) agreement, our graduates are eligible for certification in Rhode Island and all other states with the exception of Alaska, Iowa and Minnesota.

RWU discloses that the Master of Arts in Special Education and Bachelor of Arts in Education do not satisfy all educational requirements for licensure as an elementary or secondary public-school educator. Certification and licensure requirements are set by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), and students interested in learning about RIDE requirements, including state reciprocity policies, should enquire via the RIDE website or the students’ resident state websites for the most current information on licensure requirements for educators.
