ENG 107 - Japanese Anime: Global Culture Cross-Listed with: FILM 353 Requirement Fulfillment: Fulfills an elective requirement in the Film Studies Minor and Core Curriculum as a C4 (a course that satisfies the stated outcomes of Core 104) This course explores Japanese animation, an arresting visual product, through two broad frameworks. First, we will consider anime’s unique formal characteristics from the position of media studies and discuss the reasons for its global success. Second, we will study significant examples of anime created over the last several decades and identify their specific themes and characteristics within the philosophical and cultural contexts. Each of these examples is coordinated with scholarly readings that focus on topics such as gender and sexuality, technology, nature and identity, and post-industrial globalization and cross-cultural adaptation.
