We will study various socio-cultural and historical aspects of food production, preparation, and consumption in East Asia. Food in different cultures represents more than subsistence patterns. We will explore the role of food topically, analyzing its place in personal and national identity, social relations, religion, ideology, and regionalism and globalization. Course material draws on literary, philosophical and anthropological studies as well as recent writing and films on East Asian food culture. Class activities are organized around critical discussion of the commonalities as well as distinctiveness of food cultures among the three East Asian countries and between them and their Western counterparts.
