CLS 106 - The Aeneid

Publius Vergilius Maro (or Virgil) is the greatest of the ancient Latin poets. He is also the author of Rome’s national epic, the Aeneid, the story about Aeneas’ journey from the fall of Troy to Italy and the eventual rise of the Roman Empire. In this course, students will read an English translation of the poem, consider its significance to both the emperor Augustus and the Roman people of the 1st century and, lastly, examine the legacy of the text in the later Italian epic poem by Dante, The Divine Comedy.
