ARCH 541 - Environmental Systems II Prerequisites: ARCH 333 or ARCH 540 . Graduate standing or Senior standing w/ permission of the instructor Requirement Fulfillment: Requirement Fulfillment: Major Delivery: Lecture Environmental Systems II expands on the sustainability-focused and integrative design mindset of Environmental Systems I and builds upon the foundational principles introduced in that course.
The course investigates a range of interrelated systems, including: (1) design considerations undergirding acoustic, lighting, and thermal performance and experience; (2) sustainability indicators such as energy demand, life cycle impacts, and carbon footprint; and (3) building infrastructure systems for mechanical ventilation, potable and wastewater, power distribution, fire suppression, and vertical transportation.
Instruction is based on lectures, case studies, and hands-on exercises. Students engage with design heuristics to inform their design process, and apply simplified calculation methods, physical modeling, as well as steady-state and transient computer simulations to evaluate building performance.
