ARCH 214 - Architectural Design Core Studio IV Prerequisites: ARCH 213 , MATH 136 or higher Requirement Fulfillment: B.S. in Architecture; Delivery: Other This studio continues to develop the students’ design process, exploring architectural concepts and strategies that can significantly influence building form. A sequence of exercises of increasing complexity explores the relationship between human scale, space, program, site, structure, and materials, culminating in a multi-family housing project. Distinct urban sites in diverse locations serve as catalysts to investigate how the fundamental human need for shelter is affected by regional and cultural precedents as well as by particular climatic conditions. Students are asked to address basic environmental issues by considering passive strategies for their housing proposals. Structural concepts and material selection are studied, as well as building safety and accessibility through the implementation of appropriate means of egress and universal design concepts into their proposals. Faculty lectures are integrated into the semester to enrich and support the design studio.
