ARCH 231 - Construction Materials and Assemblies I Cross-Listed with: ARCH 534 Prerequisites: Sophomore standing Requirement Fulfillment: Major Delivery: Lecture This course is an introduction to the art of making buildings. Students survey materials and methods used to create major elements in building construction, including foundation, wall, floor, roof, enclosure and interior finish systems. Materials are understood through their physical properties, origins, and processing, as well as the energy and environmental implications of their use in architectural design. Students deepen their understanding of materials through hands-on assignments that pair design and fabrication using wood, concrete, masonry, and steel. The course dedicates a substantial portion of the semester to the examination of the building envelope as the locus of design resolution between technical and expressive realms, with an emphasis on wood and masonry construction.
