CORE 102 - Challenges of Democracy Prerequisites: None This course, which is taught primarily by faculty from the Departments of History & American Studies and Politics & International Relations, investigates the roots of current democratic thought through the study of primary source material dating from antiquity to the present. Other sources of inquiry may include scholarly analyses, films and documentaries, and works of the imagination including literature and art. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to explain, evaluate and critique the key concepts from these primary source readings and demonstrate how these concepts are expressed in the modern world. Special attention will be paid to the student’s ability to apply this knowledge to such topics as political institutions, activism and national identity.
